Slaves
It is a typical, simple furnished, hotel-room. Abouk, 9 years old, is huddled up in the bed. Machiek, 15 years, is nervously turning his chair. - We were kidnapped by the militia my mother, father, sister and me, says Abouk in a low voice. - One night I heard my mother scream and I ran to her, continues Machiek. I fled in panic but they caught me and took a sharp metal harpoon through my feet to force me to the ground. Abouk and Machiek are two of thousands of children liberated from slavery during the civil war in southern Sudan. In the animated documentary ”Slaves” we follow Abouk and Machiek from the killing of their parents, their abduction by the militia and their life in slavery until they were liberated. The voices we hear are the original voices of the two children, recorded at an interview in Stockholm in 2003. The animation is composed in a sincere and original design, that ables the audience to take in the grim life story that the children tell us.
